Bass ReFlex Statyk's experimental nature can be accredited to not only his music, but his persona as well. Growing up around a family of musicians, it wasn't long before the musicality began to grow inside the mind of the youngster. "I grew up around my father and grandfather, who both played a lot of guitar. I can remember as a three year-old falling asleep in my dad's guitar case while he played music for my brothers and me," he recalls. Then at the tender age of seven, Statyk laid his hands on his first guitar. Not even a year later, he had also experimented with a synthesizer and computer, which his father had bought.

By the time Statyk had entered high school, he had also experimented with flute, trumpet, drums, keyboard, piano, and bass. "I had always been interested in different aspects of sound. I guess I was trying to learn as much as I could," he comments. It was at this point that Statyk put his musical knowledge into motion, beginning an alternative band with a few friends, which soon-after molded itself into a punk band.

By the time Statyk had finished high school, he had also played bass in the jazz band and guitar in a metal band. It wasn't until a friend had dragged Statyk along to a house party that his love for electronic dance music began to take shape. "I was forced into going to a house party. After going through the whole experience, I knew this is what I wanted to do," he remembers. "I'd say that the biggest thing that turned me on to it was the fact that you didn't have four other band members to argue with throughout the entire songwriting and production process."

Inspired by Florida's B. Nice and DJ Gumbee, Staty worked day and night to craft his own signature sound. While Statyk's sound is dominated by synth-lines and echo-y hi-hats, he uses elements of his entire musical background to craft an experimental sound that few can compete with. "It all depends on my mindset when I sit down to write. My latest finished track has a heavy industrial feel to it. You can find harmonic piano riffs influenced from people like The Beatles in my other songs," Statyk adds. "The most important goal I have is to not lose sight of why I produce, pushing the boundaries of genres and experimenting. I don't like to follow the rules of what everyone else is doing. I guess its limits I have a problem with. I try not to put limitations on anything I do with the exception of morality. My ultimate goal though, is to not let production be anything less than a creative and constructive way to express my emotions. That's what music has always been to me."

Statyk's music also carries a transcendental message, one which allows him to connect with not only the elements of his music, but the crowd as well. This was what began his journey as a deejay. "DJing was pretty much just a way for me to get my music out there. I didnt know the people that I do now so I couldn't put my songs into the hands of the DJs that are playing out on a regular basis. I had to get it to the ears of the people on my own." While Statyk is primarily a breaks deejay, just as with his production, he combines many elements and styles to create an eclectic set that few can match. "My set depends on my mood. If I'm upset about something, I tend to reach for some nuskool breaks. If I'm energetic and high on life, the hard house usually comes out, and as emotions change during a set, so does the selection of music. I guess you never really know what to expect when I'm playing. I know I never do."

Having been DJing for several years now, Statyk continues to push the boundaries of experimentation, mixing the most diverse selection of tracks. "I do a lot of playing with knobs, sampling, and other fun 'tricks' when I play. I try to make myself an entertainer and not just someone that stands around and mixes records," he remarks on his method on the turntables.

Continuing to strive for the experimental sound, Statyk's future goals include expanding outside of the electronic dance genre. "I love all music so I think it would be fun to work with other artists throughtout the music industry."
